A Fresh Approach to Email Monetization: A 20% Revenue Boost

by Adsterra Team

Email monetization is witnessing a surge with new ways to get massive leads, clicks, and payouts appearing. We reached out to one of Adsterra’s publishers, Muhammad, who’s now ready to reverse-engineer the whole concept and share his approach to pulling quality traffic from emails.

Muhammad has contributed to our blog with a Quora Monetization case study ($18K earnings!) Now he’s here with a workable set of techniques you, too, can apply to upgrade your strategy.

Hi everyone, I’m Muhammad, a blogger focusing on health, relationships, and career. My articles aim to help people build stronger families, avoid common mistakes that ruin trust, and improve their career prospects.

Even with a significant number of loyal readers, I still need to make my blog visible to new audiences. One reason for this is to get wider exposure and higher traffic volumes. Another reason is to obtain greater earnings.

The more engaged users you have, the more you get paid. Popunders by Adsterra have already made me over 18,000 dollars. I recently shared one of my monetization strategies with Quora in this blog. Another evergreen and robust strategy is email marketing.

Today’s story is about how to drive higher website traffic from email campaigns and amplify your ad revenues.

1. Generating email subscriptions
2. Engaging users to visit my website
3. Growing revenue from Popunder ad views

Email monetization in action

I will walk through every critical stage, from building lists to making money from email traffic.

How to increase user engagement using email marketing

1. Make website users become email subscribers

My primary step to growing engaged audiences was implementing a subscription form on my blog. It’s easy, and it’s the first action everyone can do without any difficulties. Just use any of your WordPress (or Blogger) theme’s lead forms.

That’s one of the forms I used to place. But later, I added the “Your Name” field.

By engaging users to become subscribers, I obtained an opportunity to send them content updates and trigger them to return and read more articles. Here are my tips for making a quality subscription form:

  1. Be honest and don’t promise false values like prizes or freebies if you don’t intend to hold giveaways
  2. Instead of a blunt “subscribe to a newsletter,” tell why users should leave their date
  3. Offer additional value like I did by sharing some extra materials from my archive exclusively with subscribers
  4. Keep your form as short as possible
  5. Don’t place the form at the bottom of the page only. Add a popup instead.
  6. Don’t use aggressive popup settings, or users will leave your blog instead of getting engaged with the content.

As for email subscription popups, I’m using the one by Jetpack Newsletter plugin. With many flexible settings, I can make the popup appear when a new reader is about to leave my blog.

2. Personalize email content and engage in reading blog

Segmenting your email subscribers is a must if you want users to stay involved with your website content longer and reduce unsubscriptions (or hard bounces.)

My Jetpack Newsletter plugin helps build different segments based on user preferences. Each segment receives a set of tailored content every week. Users click on the article’s headlines to read more, leading to website visits increase, engagement growth, and ad views boost.

Tips for email personalization

  1. Use placeholders offered by your plugin or mailing service. User data like first name, last name, city, etc will automatically replace placeholders. But you should collect this information first, of course.
  2. Craft catchy email topics that will directly relate to what readers like
  3. Use triggers on your website to send emails when users perform specific actions (e.g., read more than two similar articles)

3. A/B test email subject lines

To achieve high email open rates, I had to experiment with subject lines. It’s important to grab user attention with this short line of text.

I regularly A/B test subject lines and article headlines I put inside emails to optimize click-through rates and newsletter openings. Top performers include those with a sense of urgency or curiosity, while the less successful ones often lack clarity or fail to resonate with the audience.

Here are some examples of the best performers. You may have noticed that three of them contain numbers, which is still a great way to pull attention:

  • Boost Your Stamina In Bed With This Simple Recipe
  • Things You Should Not Tell People About Your Wife
  • 6 ways to make your relationship strong
  • 5 things you should never do pleasing a woman
  • 7 Greatest Life lessons most young people learn very late in life

These steps above are enough to grow the list of subscribers from current readers, both loyal and occasional, and increase revisits. Within the first month, I got a 30% raise in revisits only by doing what I outlined above.

You can’t apply only organic email marketing to generate lots of new subscribers. Therefore, I resorted to paid traffic.

How to get more email subscribers using Facebook Ads

An essential part of my email monetization strategy is driving new portions of traffic. While I use a subscription form on my blog, I can’t say it always supplies multiple subscribers. Paid traffic is an efficient way to solve this problem.

My problem was fewer readers of my career and education articles. Facebook Ads allow me to target users based on their interests, so it was my primary and only means of getting paid traffic.

I created a standalone landing page with a subscription form to lead exclusively paid users there. With a landing page, you have more options to capture users’ attention and persuade them to subscribe.

I strategically designed Facebook ads targeting specific demographics and interests related to health and relationships. Costs per click were affordable, ranging from ₦0.37 to ₦1.87. I targeted countries with low competition among other advertisers but with a high demand for my topics.

Examples of countries with low costs per click: India, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Egypt, DR Congo, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa.

Setting a reasonable budget, I monitored ad performance closely, adjusting as needed to maximize results. There’s no better tactic than constantly monitoring your CTRs and checking the number of subscriptions you get. If you get lots of clicks but few email subscribers, it’s better to suspend the campaign, check your landing page, and alter ad creatives.

Here are my best creatives and the number of clicks they generated. And theconversion rate into subscriptions was about 30%.

How to convert email traffic into money

After generating email subscribers, my final step was to start making more money from them or implement my email monetization strategy. With the increased traffic I obtained from sending tailored newsletters, I needed two things:

  • Make users stay on blog pages as long as possible
  • Place non-intrusive ads so that users can read my blog while also watching advertisements

The first part was the easiest since I applied targeted email marketing campaigns with personalized content. Readers received the content they were interested in. On average, users read 2 or more articles I offer them in a customized newsletter.

The more time users spend on my blog, the higher the opportunity to meet Popunder ads I placed. Thanks to the increased traffic volume, I now make more than $100 in 5 days only.

Why Popunders?

My goal is to maintain high engagement rates, so I don’t support the idea of stuffing my web pages with multiple ad units. Popunders leave my content unaffected by flashy images. Their mechanics is to open up a new website tab with a product or service advertised when users just navigate my pages.

It’s pretty easy to add a Pop on your WordPress website, but before that, you must sign up as a publisher.

Bonus part: Email traffic monetization mistakes

If you miss out on these steps, you can fail to generate enough traffic and spend too much on paid ads. So make sure you don’t make such mistakes.

Neglecting email personalization and audience segmentation. If you’re a blogger, you should be able to segment audiences and offer them tailored content like I did with my automated segmentation plugin.

Focusing solely on acquisition, ignoring engagement. If you have cheap leads, it doesn’t mean these users stay on your website. So, create engaging content, provide exclusive advice, and keep your content unique.

Ignoring user feedback. It’s vital to reply to your readers’ feedback. That’s what I call “a feedback loop.” By encouraging readers to leave comments under every article, I got a perfect source of insights for future articles. Answering users’ comments is no less critical, of course.

Neglecting ad performance monitoring on platforms like Adsterra and Facebook Ads Manager. User behavior changes rapidly, and I recommend regularly checking how many new readers your paid campaigns send, not only CTR rates. By checking ad impressions numbers and CPM rates on Adsterra, you’ll get vital statistics on your traffic quality.

By following these steps and avoiding common pitfalls, you can build upon the success of this email monetization strategy to enhance your website’s traffic and revenue with Popunder or any other Adsterra ad.

Email monetization strategy wrap-up:

My strategy involved:

  1. Engaging users to become my email subscribers on a website
  2. Running Facebook Ads campaigns to attract more subscribers
  3. Sending segmented emails with personalized content to attract traffic to my blog
  4. Putting Adsterra Popunders on my blog
  5. Monetizing 20% higher with more traffic obtained from revisits and new email subscribers

You should also pay attention to personal data collection regulations within your region. All my email lists adhere to GDPR and other relevant geolocation guidelines. They were built organically, without any motivation or incentive techniques. I believe it’s the only way to build a loyal readership.
